Aurillac and Salers
A discreet capital, Aurillac lines up its lauze roofs around Saint-Géraud square and its abbey. In summer, the street-theatre festival turns the city into a giant stage. An hour away, Salers, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, impresses with its Renaissance houses carved from volcanic stone. Two different moods, for two dates to pair up.
Tournemire, Marcolès and old villages
Clustered around its Anjony castle, Tournemire ranks among the department’s loveliest villages. Marcolès keeps its medieval ramparts and two fortified gates. In all these places, the paving is easy underfoot, fountains are plentiful and bakeries always open. Ideal for a stroll together, from square to square, at your own pace.
Cheeses and Cantal tables
The Cantal is a king of Auvergne cheese boards: cantal, salers, saint-nectaire, bleu d’Auvergne and fourme d’Ambert all have their story. The markets of Saint-Flour, Mauriac and Aurillac are full of them. On Lyad, Cantal members share their inns and producers; it is up to you to find someone to taste with.
